A man of under-spoken elegance, Rhodesian native John Clews started his career as a London accountant before his passion for wine and winemaking led him to swap his calculator for a crush pad in the mid 80’s. In pursuance of his passion, John left London to hone his winemaking skills at the University of California at Davis where he was awarded the prestigious M.A. Amerine Research Scholarship from the Wine Spectator.
He earned his M.S. in Viticulture and Enology in 1990 and soon after secured positions at Newton Vineyard in Napa Valley, Preston Vineyards in Sonoma County and finally Steele Wines, where he acted as general manager/chief enologist. Recognized as possessing the unique skills necessary to continue to craft the wines of balance and elegance for which Clos Du Val had come to be known, Clews joined the winery in April 1999 working initially under winery co-founder Bernard Portet before taking the reigns as head winemaker in 1999.
Today, John Clews acts of COO and chief winemaker for Clos Du Val and, most importantly, as the steward of Clos Du Val’s unique character and style. He is married and lives in Napa.
