Winemaking Philosophy

Clos du Val wines are renowned for their expressive fresh fruit characteristics, elegant balance, rounded palate, and long finish. Creating a wine that carries these characteristics begins in the vineyard and includes every step from berry to bottle.

At the helm of our winemaking program is winemaker Carmel Greenberg. Hailing from Israel, Carmel fell in love with the world of wine while working in a French restaurant in Tel Aviv. Her enthusiasm quickly turned into dedicated independent study, and later led her to move to the United States to pursue a degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis. She has since shaped her focus around the Napa Valley, crafting expressive and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-inspired blends.

It’s no secret that great wines are made in the vineyard. Our commitment to the terroir of the Stags Leap District, which we have farmed for 50 years, and the greater Napa Valley allow us to coax some of the finest-quality fruit from this historic and prized region.

Hand-harvested and hand-sorted, our fruit is treated with the utmost care in our cellar. Our focus on blending as an integral component of Clos du Val wines means that we are able to identify and isolate small batches of fruit at different stages of the vinification process, and later assemble the perfect blend using each lot’s distinctive characteristics.

Oak plays a supporting role in our wines, and is never center stage. We prefer to focus on the fresh and expressive fruit character of our wines, and use oak to gently soften our wines’ tannins and contribute subtle undertones of flavor and aroma. Our approach to oak aging also contributes to the distinctive ageability and longevity of Clos du Val wines.
